When it comes to Valentine's Day many people consider a dozen red roses to be the height of romance.
Lisa, the owner of Morgans of Chigwell in South Woodford, has been a florist for eight years and was singled out to showcase the design excellence of East London and Essex florists. And though she is no stranger to competitions this is the first time she has been asked to inspire fellow florists with her flower magic. Speaking before her debut, Lisa admitted she was a bit daunted by the task. She said: "People are going to use my designs in their own shops. I can't afford to get it wrong". As a flower arranger at the Birmingham show Lisa had to come up with two original designs for her demonstration. But she is used to pressure as before finding floristry she had a high-powered job in the City as a future and options broker, but then she fell in love with all things floral after going to a flower arranging demonstration with her mother. Now having been a florist for eight years, and owning her own shop for the past four, she is still enthusiastic about her work. "We do weddings, funerals, bar mitzvahs and corporate events. The people I deal with are so nice and I do something that I'm very passionate about", she said. And she has had to deal with some unusual requests in the past. For one traditional East End funeral she designed a floral fruit stall more than five feet high and had to use a ladder to complete it and on another occasion she was asked to provide floral displays at a "Local person of influence's" barbeque. Lisa also teaches floral history, flower arranging and balloon artistry and is currently teaching the Japanese flower arranging art called Ikebana at Heathcote School, Chingford. Florist Morgans of Chigwell, based in stylish new premises on Chigwell Road, flew the flag for Essex at the two-day Spring Florist Event in Birmingham recently. Owner Lisa Morgan was promoting the design talent of West Essex and East London florists at the event, which drew nearly 7,000 visitors. Well qualified in her field, she is a teacher and lecturer on historical flower design (and balloon artist to boot). Both traditional and contemporary approaches were reflected in her designs, which represented local florists and designers Lisa was one of a number of debut designer demonstrators, the florist industry's way of inspiring an infusion of fresh ideas and talent in the trade. All money raised at the event will be donated to the Macmillan Cancer Relief Appeal Source: West Essex Life, January 2006 |
